Behind the Classics

“A Night at The Movies” presents educational talks and screenings of classic films from the 1930s to the late 1960s. Each class session of “Behind The Classics” will show a movie in its entirety and share the fascinating details of the film. Screenings are preceded by a 30-minute informative discussion about the film, which includes its origins, the script, casting, production, audience reaction, box office sales, and the legacy of the film. 

All presentations are augmented with stills in a Powerpoint presentation illustrating the details of the discussion. 

Films for this session will include

• June 20 - North by Northwest
• July 11 - The Magnificent Seven
• July 25 - On the Waterfront

Learning Outcomes:

• Students will learn about classic movies that have endured over the years and have taken a place in popular culture and have taught us about ourselves, our history and our culture.
• Students will also have an appreciation for how these films were made, the context in which they were made and why they still stand up today as a reflection of who we are and an exploration of an art form that America in particular has embraced and advanced.

Many current directors and films have been influenced by the great films, directors and stars of our Motion Picture history and past. By watching these films students will have a greater appreciation for the films of current movie directors like Steven Spielberg, Steven Soderbergh, JJ Abrams, Christopher Nolan and many others whose films were impacted and shaped by previous artists working at their creative peaks.
