What you'll learn in this kids music class:

We believe that songwriting is the highest form of writing. In barely three minutes, a song can tell a story like a novel, or play images in our heads like a movie. A song can evoke as beautifully as a poem or as forcefully as a picket sign. It can feel as personal as a journal entry or a letter to a best friend. It can gather the rest of us like an inspired speech or a rally cry. Songs move us to our core—to dance, to cheer, to shout, to sing, to weep, to hope, to believe, to remember, to move.

To learn to write songs, then, is to develop remarkable life skills of perception, critical thinking, emotional intelligence, problem solving, and self-expression. Novelist, screenwriter, poet, scribe: Songwriters learn to be the best noticers—and they report what they notice back to the tribe. This class is devoted to kindling that passion to notice, the ability to express, and the willingness to share.

In WORDS & MUSIC, your young person will be guided into her or his powers of self-expression, in writing and in music. For age groups 7-9 and 9-12, the two-hour period is divided into two separate classes.

One hour is devoted to the words of songs (lyrics!) in many disciplines (stories, poems, letters...), combining creative self-expression with critical thinking. We will learn to tell our stories, in our voices, in our styles.

In the other hour, your child will learn and participate in the language of MUSIC. We will come to understand the vocabulary and qualities of music—rhythm, time, feel, groove, melody, harmony, and more--through fun, interactive, engaging group activities. We will sing, clap, stomp, beat, say, shout, and play ideas until self-expression in music is as natural and necessary as laughter.

In this class and in this program, young people will develop confidence, courage, compassion and empathy to learn to raise and trust their voices and express them, memorably.

A LITTLE MORE INFORMATION
  • A value of this program is collaborative learning; more experienced children will be put in position to learn to be leaders and teachers to their peers, encouraging and uplifting the room rather than being held back and waiting
  • Beginners and newcomers will feel and be encouraged and included
  • Instructors will be looking to identify individual needs, weaknesses, and strengths and to find ways to address them thoughtfully and compassionately
  • Program Instructors for the current session: Words, Rob Seals; Music, Ryan Brown

School Notes: For new students, there will be a $35 one-time registration fee, payable in person at the start of the class.
