This was my first time taking a baking class and it was awesome! I was worried I was going to be out of my league since I am such a novice. However, I needn’t have been concerned. Syd was patient and helpful. I was visiting from out of town so I had no supplies so Syd brought extra tools for me so I could participate. My cake looked great and I can’t wait to practice my new found cake decorating skills. This was a great class for all skill levels. Can’t wait me to visit LA and come again!

Discover the Best Cake Making Classes in Los Angeles

Cake making is the art of making and decorating a variety of different types of cakes. It dates back hundreds of years, to ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome, where historians have found evidence of cakes made out of honey and used to celebrate important events. It continues to be popular today; cakes are a tradition at special events like birthdays, graduations, and weddings, and many more people purchase them simply because they want to enjoy a sweet treat.

Why You Should Learn Cake Making in Los Angeles

People learn cake making for many different reasons. Some do it for fun. Many cake makers report that cake making is extremely creative and satisfying, and can also be a therapeutic and relaxing process. Another reason to learn cake making is that it can be financially beneficial. Making your own cakes instead of buying them can save you a lot of money. If you get good enough to turn your hobby into a business, you can also see financial benefits.

In-Person Cake Making Classes in Los Angeles

There are a number of different in-person cake making classes in Los Angeles. Cakery by Syd is an LA-based school that offers many different cake decorating classes. Love Dad Tire Fondant Cake is a class where students learn to create a cake that looks like an old tire. The class covers making a plan, covering a cake in fondant, and using the airbrush to create rust, dimension, depth and texture. The class costs $50, and has two sessions. Students will find a supply list online. Syd is an award-winning cake designer and offers small-group classes at A & J Cake and Candy Supply in Glendora. Glendora is about 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. All of Syd’s classes are held in the store after hours, so that participants have lots of space and privacy for learning.

Syd also offers a class called Gum Paste Dahlia on Ruched Fondant, where students create a fondant cake that looks like it is covered in ruched fabric, and has a dahlia on top. They learn how to create the dahlia out of gum paste, and how to create the ruching out of fondant. A supply list is available online, and all supplies can be purchased at A & J Cake and Candy Supply, where the class is held. This class runs for two and a half hours, and costs $50.

Los Angeles City College also offers cake making classes. In Pastry Decorating: Cupcake, Cake Pops & Mini Cakes, students learn to make frosting and decorate cakes, cupcakes, and cake pops. Instruction includes coloring frosting, incorporating edible glitter and other decor, and the cleanest way to work with cupcakes. All students need to bring a number of ingredients and kitchen supplies to class, which are detailed online. This class has five sessions and costs $85. Los Angeles City College is a public community college; one of the oldest in the Los Angeles area. It is located less than five miles from downtown Los Angeles.

Students can also learn cake making at Chef Eric’s Culinary Classroom. Chef Eric is a European-trained professional chef, and opened this cooking school in 2003. He offers both recreational and professional cooking classes, with an emphasis on hands-on learning in an intimate environment. In Heavenly Cupcakes, students learn how to frost and fill cupcakes. Specific cupcakes include: cream cheese red velvet cupcakes, chocolate buttercream devil’s food cupcakes, and Swiss meringue coconut cream cupcakes. Students also learn how to create variations of frostings and fillings. This class is $150. Participants should wear comfortable shoes.

Virtual Cake Making Classes

While some people prefer the real-time interaction of an in-person class, others find the virtual class format preferable. Online cake making classes let you skip the commute, and learn from the comfort of home. Online classes do have some potential negatives, including the possibility of technological issues like internet connection problems, and the fact that you’ll probably have to supply your own materials. However, learning online also offers a lot more flexibility than learning in person, and has become increasingly popular in recent years.

If you’re planning to learn online, you’ll find a few different virtual options for cake making and other types of baking and decorating classes. Culinary instructor Chelly Klann runs a cooking school called the Good Food Project, where she tries to make cooking fun and accessible for everyone, no matter how much experience they have. Her French Macaron Step-By-Step Class covers making, flavoring, piping, baking, and filling a batch of French macaron cookies. This class is $40, and runs for an hour and a half. Students get a supply list after they register.

Food Craft is a school based in New York City and offers a virtual class called Cookie Decorating. In this class, the instructor covers basic cookie decorating techniques, like flooding, marbling, and wet-on-wet. Students decorate for a specific theme such as Valentine’s Day or Easter. Every student who enrolls in this class receives a cookie decorating kit containing vanilla cookies, sprinkles, four different colors of icing, toothpicks, a pair of gloves, and food craft tissue paper. Gluten-free or vegan cookies can be substituted. Students will need paper towels and a pair of scissors. This class is two hours long and tuition is $850.

Aspiring bakers might also be interested in the Summer Pie Workshop, where they can learn how to bake a double-crust summer fruit pie with an all-butter crust. This class is offered by Home Cooking New York, and runs for an hour and a half through Zoom. It costs $50. Students can get a list of supplies and ingredients online. The class is designed to give students all the skills and knowledge they need to bake a pie successfully.

Private Group Cake Making Classes in Los Angeles

If you’re looking for an entertaining activity for a group, consider a cake making class. Making cakes is fun, creative, and something that almost everyone can participate in. CourseHorse can provide a variety of different cake making classes for private groups. It makes the booking process quick and easy. You don’t need to register, or pay any booking fees, and a confirmation of your booking will be sent to you within 24 hours. You can even make changes to your booking up to 72 hours before the event, as long as you meet the minimum group size.

In addition to cake making classes, CourseHorse offers a variety of other baking-related classes for groups. For instance, in the Virtual Apple Crisp Workshop, a professional chef instructor leads participants through the process of prepping the apple filling, making the streusel topping, baking the apple crisp, and creating apple cider whipped cream to put on top. Every participant recipes an apple crisp kit prior to the event, which includes some non-perishable ingredients, plus a gift card to purchase the remaining ingredients. A pie plate, knife and cutting board, bowl, saucepan, wooden spoon, and whisk are needed. This class runs for an hour and a half, costs $110 per person, and can accommodate up to 255 people.

Groups interested in making dessert might also enjoy the Virtual Yeasted Donut Workshop. This workshop is led by a professional chef and instructor, and participants learn all of the steps of donut making, including making the dough, and rolling, cutting, and frying the donuts. They also make a sugar mix to roll the donuts in, and a chocolate dipping sauce. Prior to the start of the class, donut ingredients are shipped to each participant, as well as a gift card to purchase perishable ingredients. Participants need to supply some common kitchen tools, such as a bowl, cookie sheet, and rolling pin. Up to 250 people can take this class at one time. It runs for an hour and a half, and costs $105 per person.

Most group classes booked through CourseHorse take place over Zoom; however, Google Meets, Microsoft Teams, and WebEx are also supported. For more information about scheduling a private group cake making class, contact CourseHorse.
