3D lighting software isn’t just for professionals with huge budgets: designers and technicians at every level can use free software to plan designs and solve problems before setting foot in a venue.
In this class, you’ll learn to use (free) Capture software to light in the virtual world. Create stages, import scenery, hang and focus lights, and export renderings to share with your team. You’ll also learn how to turn your ideas into print-ready light plots and how to generate equipment reports to have everything ready on day one.

A: Nope! We’ve found that the best way to learn new software is to take notes during class and try your hand at home. If you do want to try your hand at Capture during class time, you’ll need a computer running Capture 2018 Student Edition.
In this class, you’ll learn to use (free) Capture software to light in the virtual world. Create stages, import scenery, hang and focus lights, and export renderings to share with your team. You’ll also learn how to turn your ideas into print-ready light plots and how to generate equipment reports to have everything ready on day one.
You’ll learn:
- How to use (free) Capture software to visualize a design in 3D
- How to create a stage layout and hang lights
- How to import scenery and people from Sketchup and 3D Warehouse
- How to turn on lights and adjust their size, color, focus, and more
- How to adjust rendering settings and save portfolio images
- How to turn your design into a print-ready light plot
