Course Description for ART THRU MYTH w/Sonia Estrada Conrad, MA
A) Clear and Concise Description of the Class:
In four two-hour sessions, students will travel through time while listening to the myth of Inanna -- Queen of Heaven and Earth followed by creative time during which the participants will create their own piece of artwork based on their observation, interpretation and inspired imagination stirred by this myth. Inanna is the Sumerian goddess of love, beauty, sex, desire, fertility, war, combat, and political power, and is equivalent to the Akkadian, Babylonian and Assyrian goddess Ishtar. Using a variety of art supplies, not limited to and including, acrylic paint, watercolor, color pencils, crayons and magazine for collage, we will spend time discussing the myth and creating art stimulated by the images inspired by this account. The artwork created by students is aimed to encourage students to discuss with one another their own key takeaways from such myths in relation to the context of current and/or personal affairs including, but not limited to, culture, politics, gender, religion and experience.
B) Recommended Skill Level or Previous Experience Expected:
No prior experience needed, only the desire to create, share and have fun.
C) Student Learning Outcomes/Goals:
1) View culture and personal life thru the lens of myth and how it can inspire imagination and creativity.
2) Take a mental image, idea or theme and create an art piece that reflects said image, idea or theme.
3) Collaborate and connect with other students for two hours through creative storytelling, artistic and diverse expression, and fun conversation.
D) If the class is one of several in a program, is there a specific sequence in which the classes must be taken? (Please specify order, if applicable)
The classes, if at all possible, should be taken in order as outlined in order for each student to learn and experience the entire chronological telling of the myth and be able to analyze the possible theme(s) that can be seen threading through all four sequential pieces of art created during the workshop.
E) Workshop marketability
This class is inspired by current workshops that are open to the general public such as: Paint Nite; Canvas, Paint, and Wine Oh My!; and Black Canvas Painting. These workshops allow patrons to purchase alcoholic beverages and have an art instructor which does a step by step process where they all get to create the same painting. Of course this class will operate without the offering of alcohol. It will not be an art class in which the students are taught any particular art form, instead students will be encouraged to discuss and interpret myth as well as allow a free form art experience which focuses on the experience of storytelling through myth as a catalyst for the imagination to expand the creativity of the individual and share their inspired artwork by allowing all methods of creative modalities to come together. This class is simply aimed at building a community by connecting students with one another through storytelling and creative freedom using one’s imagination and inspiration.
