Discover the Best Stained Glass Classes in Los Angeles

Stained glass is a decorative art form that involves arranging small colored glass pieces into intricate designs or scenes. The technique of creating stained glass dates back to ancient times and grew in popularity during the Gothic and Renaissance periods in Europe, where it was used to adorn the windows of churches and cathedrals. Stained glass can range from simple geometric patterns to elaborate narrative scenes with vibrant colors and intricate details. Today, stained glass is still used in religious and secular contexts, and it continues to be a popular medium for artists and craftspeople.

Why You Should Learn Stained Glass in Los Angeles

Learning how to make stained glass can be a rewarding creative experience. Selecting and cutting glass pieces, fitting them together with lead strips, and soldering them into place is a meditative and calming process. It's an activity that allows you to focus on the task at hand and forget about the outside world.

Moreover, creating a beautiful piece of stained glass can give you a sense of accomplishment and pride as you bring your vision to life and share it with others. Whether you're looking for a new hobby or a way to express your artistic side, learning how to make stained glass can be a fulfilling and enjoyable pursuit.

In-Person Stained Glass Classes in Los Angeles

If you’re new to stained glass art or want to kick your skills up a notch, you can take an onsite stained glass class. Studios, ateliers, and other venues offer in-person stained glass classes in the Los Angeles area. Some focus on working on flat projects, while others teach you how to experiment while crafting stunning three-dimensional objects.

Allen Kenoyer Stained Glass in Lawndale is a full-service workshop and retail store. They carry a vast selection of glass, tools, books, gifts, and materials for making stained glass. In addition to offering in-person stained glass classes, they strive to meet the needs of professional glass artists.

Beginners can take Mosaic Madness: Glass on Glass, a two-and-a-half-hour session at Allen Kenoyer Stained Glass in which you’ll discover how to make glass-on-glass mosaics. You’ll have a blast learning the techniques for creating mosaics using a range of materials like scrap glass, which is included. Bring your own nuggets, glass tiles, broken china, glue, and grout. Students must provide their own 8x10 picture frame that contains drop-in glass. Safety goggles are also student-provided and strongly encouraged.

First-time stained glass learners can opt for the Beginning Copper Foil class at Allen Kenoyer Stained Glass. This is a five-session introduction to the copper foil method of stained glass construction. In class, you’ll get familiar with the essential tools of the trade: glass cutters, pliers, and running pliers. You’ll learn how to hold a glass cutter properly, score glass, break the scored glass using pliers or running pliers, use a straight edge, and cut basic shapes with precision. If you’re not a beginner but need to improve your cutting skills, this class is for you.

Not your first time at the stained glass rodeo? Check out one of the First Friday Fusing Nights at Allen Kenoyer Stained Glass, appropriate for all skill levels. In this fun, “open idea” gathering, you’ll create your own object. Sometimes, they will have a special project available, and they’re open to suggestions from students. The session fee includes one firing with 6 x 6 kiln space. Additional space and glass can be provided for an additional fee. Make your project during class time, and they will fire it for you and have it ready the next week for pickup. Glass-cutting experience is a plus but not required.

If you like to paint and want to see how to paint glass, sign up for the two-and-a-half-hour Doodle Plates/ Frit Painting class at Allen Kenoyer Stained Glass. In this beginner-level class, you’ll discover how to use glass frit and paint. Students will make a 6” x 6” stained glass plate using frits and glass paints. All materials are included with the class fee, and you get one firing. No previous experience working with stained glass is needed. Remember to wear safety glasses to safeguard your eyes and closed-toe shoes to protect your feet.

Virtual Stained Glass Classes

Online stained glass classes and in-person classes have distinct differences in delivery, student engagement, interaction, and overall learning experience. Here are some of the main differences between the two:

  1. Delivery: In-person classes take place in a physical classroom where the instructor and students are in the same location. On the other hand, online classes are conducted through the Internet, where instructors and students communicate and interact through online platforms.
  2. Student engagement: In an in-person class, students must be physically present and are more likely to engage in discussions and ask questions. In contrast, online learning can feel less personal, and students may be more hesitant to speak up or ask questions.
  3. Interaction: In-person classes facilitate face-to-face interaction between students and teachers. In an online class, interaction is mostly through virtual means such as video conferencing, chat, or email.
  4. Flexibility: Online classes offer more flexibility in scheduling, as students can access course materials on demand. In-person classes have a set schedule that students follow, and missing a class may mean missing out on important information.
  5. Learning environment: In-person classes provide a structured learning environment that suits some students, while online classes offer more flexible and self-paced learning that may suit others.
  6. Technology: Online classes rely heavily on technology, including computers, internet connection, and online platforms. In contrast, in-person classes may use technology to supplement traditional teaching methods.

Overall, both online and in-person classes have their advantages and disadvantages. Choosing between the two ultimately depends on individual preferences, learning styles, and circumstances.
