Ink Illustration: Drawing as Risk-Taking

This workshop is a 4-hour imagination intensive, designed to put students in touch with the wild edge of their own powers of visualization, and to connect risk-taking to the process of inventive communication. Split into two segments, Ryan will present students with a list of themes and with a group of reference photographs for the creation of two separate and distinct images using the same reference material . Students will draw in ink. The permanence and intensity of black ink force the artist to move directly from part to part, making pictures that are at once decisive and unpredictable. While students are working, Ryan will make the rounds, pointing out possible connections, introducing ink techniques, and honing in on what each artist can do to break their most basic blocks to making daring imagery. 

Our workshops are designed as both professionally intensive and communally fun introductions to printmaking. Our larger service is to equip artists with the knowledge of how to combine traditional printmaking and the resource of a community printmaking studio with their own work.

MATERIALS TO BRING:

• Plate Bristol, Watercolor Paper, or any durable Drawing Paper (able to withstand wet media) multiple sheets of any size 9'' x 12'' to 11'' x 17''
• Pencil
• Brush or Technical Pens, Dip Pens and India Ink
