Class Description

Description

What you'll learn in this figure drawing class:

A class to get all artists who are aspiring to begin their study of the human body. Students will begin their journey by learning gesture and make their way through the anatomy of the figure. The goal will be to translate the human body with design and knowledge, not just copying what you see. The class is recommended for any skill level.

Supply List:

  • A Drawing Board
  • Pad of either 18”x24” Biggie Bond Paper or Smooth Newsprint. (can also buy a pad of Layout Bond paper if feeling luxurious)
If going the Biggie/Sketch Paper route…

Sticks to choose from:

  • Prismacolors
  • Progresso pencils
  • Monolith 4B
  • Faber-Castell Polychromos Pencils
*buy them in dark colors
If going the Newsprint route…
Sticks to choose from:
  • Wolff’s Carbon Pencil 4B
  • Conte Charcoal Pencil 4B
*General’s charcoal pencils are too harsh on smooth newsprint
  • A kneaded eraser! Other erasers leave their little shavings and they waste time and can ruin your drawing when you’re trying to get ‘em off!
  • A knife, like an Olfa or exact-o, to sharpen your pencils
  • Pencil Sharpener for the pencils like Progresso, Monolith, and Faber-Castell
  • Sandpaper Block to shape the lead of pencils like Wolff’s and Conte after sharpening.
  • And something to hold all of your things in. I prefer a Niji Roll type of thing but you can use anything.

Workshop Etiquette

  • If you arrive late, please enter quietly. If you have equipment to set up, please wait for a break to set up so that you do not disrupt the class.
  • The front row of benches is reserved for individuals who are sitting. Standing in the front row will block the view of those behind you. Personal easels are not allowed in the front row, unless they are low enough that it does not obstruct any portion of the view of the people behind you.
  • Please be mindful of the amount of space you and your equipment occupy. Economize your work space to accommodate fellow artists.
  • Please be polite to the models, and ask first before taking their pictures. The model may require a fee.
  • Please do not talk while class is in session. Save all discussions for outside the studio.
  • Be sure to switch cell phones and pagers to silent model.
  • Don’t comment on others’ work unless it is solicited.
  • Animals are not permitted at school for health reasons. Assistance dogs for the disabled are allowed.
  • Please clean up your work area and properly dispose of your waste after class. Use the brush cleaning closet, not the bathroom sinks, to clean your hands, paintbrushes and other art tools.
  • No turpentine or smelly solvents and mediums are allowed. Odorless mineral spirits is preferred.
