What you'll learn in this beginner drawing class:

This class is designed as an introduction to the basic principles of visual perception; and more specifically, how light describes form. We will cover the most basic aspects of vision: from purely practical considerations to more advanced concepts of shape, value, and edge. Students will begin to develop a form language, and work towards a fluency in communicating visually.

Emphasis will be placed on developing a reliable process for picture making. Topics will include the block in, value organization, rendering, and how to simplify visual information into what is essential and personal.

During the course of this class, students will receive personalized instruction and individual projects ranging from cast studies, still life and drawing from the live model depending on the class progression.

Supply list:

  • Drawing pad
  • Strathmore 400 or any good quality paper suitable for charcoal 16″x20″ or 18″x24″ or whatever size you’d like to use,
  • Charcoal pencils – whatever brand you’d like- generals, ritmo, etc, but get a full range of hardness and softness- 2H (if you can find it), HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, willow charcoal, cheap bristle brush, round, medium size (i use a #8, but it really doesn’t matter)
  • Drawing board large enough to accommodate your pad
  • Kneaded eraser
  • Faber-castell ‘perfection’ eraser (looks like a pencil)
  • Soft paper towel or cloth to tone your paper
  • Charcoal powder if you have it, if not, i’ll bring some to class

You can use whatever you’d like to draw, these are just suggestions, and what I think will make things the easiest for you.

Workshop etiquette:

  • If you arrive late, please enter quietly. If you have equipment to set up, please wait for a break to set up so that you do not disrupt the class.
  • The front row of benches is reserved for individuals who are sitting. Standing in the front row will block the view of those behind you. Personal easels are not allowed in the front row, unless they are low enough that it does not obstruct any portion of the view of the people behind you.
  • Please be mindful of the amount of space you and your equipment occupy. Economize your work space to accommodate fellow artists.
  • Please be polite to the models, and ask first before taking their pictures. The model may require a fee.
  • Please do not talk while class is in session. Save all discussions for outside the studio.
  • Be sure to switch cell phones and pagers to silent model.
  • Don’t comment on others’ work unless it is solicited.
  • Animals are not permitted at school for health reasons. Assistance dogs for the disabled are allowed.
  • Please clean up your work area and properly dispose of your waste after class. Use the brush cleaning closet, not the bathroom sinks, to clean your hands, paintbrushes and other art tools.
  • No turpentine or smelly solvents and mediums are allowed. Odorless mineral spirits is preferred

There is a one-time registration fee (per quarter) of $20 to be paid directly to LAAFA.

It can be applied toward any extension course, workshop or visiting artist event at LAAFA. All artist demonstrations are non-refundable and non-transferable.
