Craft Kids Inter - Curricular Art begins with a colorful and fun exploration of design and texture with Teaching Artist Will Loya.


Session 1 – Color in Art


Rainbow Rhythms - The fundamentals of color theory will be discussed as students mix primary colors into secondary and complementary colors creating an abstract tempera painting based on the rainbow. The rhythmic possibilities of line will be explored as students create a dynamic drawing to colorize. The basics of paint mixing and managing a primary/secondary palette will be the technical focus of this lesson. The properties of visual light and color and the will be the science connection of this fun lesson.



Still Life "A bowl of fruit" – The “Elements of Art” will be the basis of this foundational lesson. Students will learn how to create the illusion of three-dimensional form using oil pastels while they “shade with color” and draw a unique bowl of fruit. Examples from famous artists (Frida Kahlo, Pablo Picasso, ancient Roman murals) will be presented and discussed.



Animal Camouflage - Using a chalk pencil and oil pastels, students create a multi-colored background, either geometric or organic. After choosing a animal that is known to blend into it's environment, and using similar colors and shapes, the students try to "hide" their animal in the drawing. Photo examples of various creatures (reptiles, fish, and birds) will be presented. Animal adaptations will be discussed.
