Discover the Best American Cooking Classes in Los Angeles

American cuisine is as diverse and inventive as the people that make up the country. Known as a melting pot, immigrants from across the globe, enslaved people, and indigenous populations have all contributed to the culture and food of the United States.

American cuisine can also vary by region, adding to its difficulty to be defined. Common Southern dishes are known for their barbecue, cajun, and creole, and each of these bear influence from France (think New Orleans) and those that are descendants of enslaved people, like the Gullah Geechee. The culinary style of the West is the result of a fusion of Native American, Latin American, and Mexican. The Midwest is proudly known for being the home of meat and potatoes, thanks to a large population of European immigrants.

Defining American food can be tricky but there are a few dishes that are most commonly associated with the nation’s cuisine: cookout food (hot dogs and hamburgers), southern (barbecue, grits, fried green tomatoes), meat and potatoes, and international recipes that have been given an American twist (pizza, pasta, Chinese food).

All of these dishes are delicious and satisfying when prepared correctly, so learning to cook American cuisine is certainly worthwhile. You can master mouth-watering burgers, successfully cook seafood, or prepare a perfect (albeit American) pizza when you enroll in an American cooking class.

Why You Should Learn American Cooking in Los Angeles

Because of its proximity to Mexico and the Asian countries of the Pacific, Los Angeles is a hub of fusion-style foods, a category that the United States has reigned over for decades. This mixing of cultures in food is so popular in LA that several of your favorite fast food chains originated there: Carl’s Jr., In-N-Out, Taco Bell, California Pizza Kitchen, and Panda Express. Each of these calls upon another country’s ingredients and recipes and then tweaks them just a bit to make them distinctly American. Los Angeles’ ability to embrace and adapt its multicultural food scene makes it a great place to take an American cooking class.

Learning how to cook American dishes has so many benefits, too. Our modern lives are filled with work, relationships, and seemingly never-ending lists of chores. We are constantly connected to technology, from our laptops to our phones to our televisions, which is known to cause stress. Learning to cook American cuisine can allow you to slow down, set aside your daily stressors, and focus on one singular task. There are even studies, like this one cited in Southern Living, that claim that people who frequently take on small, creative projects like baking or cooking report feeling more relaxed and happier in their everyday lives.

You can also meet new people and form new friendships in an American cooking class. You’ll instantly have a shared interest and will often be able to work together while you practice various recipes. American cuisine is a mix of many culinary styles and attracts people from all backgrounds, so you can meet people from communities different from your own. You can also use your new-found skills to cook incredible meals for your current friends and family, becoming known as the king of the cookout or the expert on at-home pizza nights.

Are you a current line cook or chef? Learning new recipes and techniques in an American cooking class can be a great way to spice up (and level up) your career. You can gain a better understanding of the cultural fusion that is central to American cuisine and then infuse your restaurant’s menu with that flare. You might even find your restaurant listed alongside these top contenders on Mash’s The Absolute Best American Restaurants in the U.S. someday.

In-Person American Cooking Classes in Los Angeles

Do you love Caribbean food? Look no further than Cook LA Cooking School’s Cajun/Creole Southern Cooking class. Students will learn the differences between the two cuisines while they learn to make a few staple dishes like chicken and sausage jambalaya, vegetarian gumbo, hush puppies, cornbread, coleslaw, and delicious sugary beignets. There’s a wine tasting provided with the finished meals and you’re welcome to BYOB if you prefer another beverage.

There’s potential nothing more All-American than a backyard dinner of your favorite grilled foods. This organic grilling course in Silver Lake will teach students to make their favorite cookout recipes with a healthy twist: each dish is completely organic. Led by Chef Mick Brown, Grill Master Champion winner on Food Network’s Cutthroat Kitchen, recipes include smoked snacks, a grilled salad, homemade all-natural BBQ sauce, and how to properly grill organic chicken, steak, fruits, and veggies.

BLVD. Kitchen offers Truly Southern Cooking that will transport you from Southern California to the Deep South. You’ll learn to master three classic soul food dishes (fried chicken, collard greens, and cornbread with candied yams) with Chef Darryl Wash in Sherman Oaks. This class is open to all levels and, as in any working kitchen, closed-toed shoes are required.

Or, you can master the main dish for Super Bowl Sunday at Cooking 101’s Chili Cook-Off. Students will take on three game-day recipes: Texas-style chili, roasted sweet corn, and grilled orange cupcakes. While the original chili recipe is attributed to a Spanish nun in the 17th century, this spicy, warm dish is a staple in many American households. Located in Irvine, you can master this savory dish and take home the first-place prize at your next chili cook-off.

Virtual American Cooking Classes

Virtual classes are a great option if you live in an area with limited in-person classes or have a difficult schedule. You can attend an online class from wherever you choose, may have more options available, and won’t have to worry about traffic or parking. While you do typically have to purchase your own materials and equipment, online American cooking classes offer enough flexibility to offset this minor inconvenience.

The Chopping Block Lincoln Square offers a Southern brunch course described as an intensively interactive two-hour workshop. Trained chefs will walk you through preparing some iconic Southern dishes like shrimp and grits, buttermilk biscuits, and spinach and grapefruit salad. Each student will be given a recipe packet, equipment list, and class syllabus upon registration to help them prepare.

A true example of American cuisine, Chicken Parmesan originated in the Northeast U.S. from Italian immigrants. You can try your hand at cooking the dish in this virtual chicken parmesan class that also includes a delicious orzo salad with sautéed asparagus, artichokes, and lemon. Students will get to select quality chicken that they will then pound, bread, and pan-fry. The class will also teach you to know when your chicken is perfectly cooked, and how to saute green vegetables and work with fresh herbs.

Is there anything more classically American than a bagel? Brought to the U.S. by immigrant Polish Jews, bagels are now seen as a staple breakfast food across America (but particularly in New York). You can master the art of making warm, doughy bagels in this virtual bagel workshop. You’ll learn to mix, proof, shape, boil, and bake New York City-worthy bagels, with classic toppings like sesame and poppy seeds, and fillings like cinnamon and raisins. Plus, you’ll whip up flavored cream cheese and butter to top off your doughy masterpieces.
