Discover the Best Mexican Cooking Classes in Los Angeles

If you're a culinary enthusiast with a desire to learn more about Mexican cuisine, Los Angeles is the ultimate destination to get started. From traditional street food to regional specialties, the city offers many options that will transport you straight to Mexico. In this article, we will dive into the world of Mexican cooking classes in Los Angeles, where expert instructors and chefs are ready to guide you through the vibrant flavors, techniques, and cultural traditions.

Why You Should Learn Mexican Cooking in Los Angeles

Los Angeles is a truly wonderful city for someone interested in learning Mexican cooking due to its vibrant culinary scene, rich cultural heritage, and local, authentic ingredients. Known for its diverse population, LA is home to a large Mexican-American community that has contributed immensely to the city's culinary landscape. The city boasts numerous Mexican markets, grocery stores, and specialty shops where aspiring chefs can find fresh produce, spices, and traditional ingredients necessary for creating authentic Mexican dishes. From chiles and tortillas to exotic herbs and spices, LA provides a treasure trove of culinary resources that allow learners to immerse themselves in the flavors and aromas of Mexican cuisine.

Los Angeles offers various restaurants specializing in Mexican cuisine, ranging from hole-in-the-wall taco stands to Michelin-starred dining establishments. By exploring the city's diverse dining scene, aspiring cooks can gain inspiration, observe cooking techniques, and taste a wide range of regional Mexican dishes. Whether you wander the street food stalls of Olvera Street or explore the renowned Mexican restaurants in Boyle Heights, there are countless opportunities to experience the authentic flavors and techniques that define Mexican cooking.

Finally, LA hosts several different cooking classes and workshops dedicated to Mexican cuisine, taught by experienced chefs and culinary experts. These classes provide hands-on learning experiences where participants can learn traditional cooking methods, master essential techniques, and understand the cultural significance behind each dish. These workshops can teach vital Mexican cooking skills, like learning to make homemade tortillas, mastering the complexity of a mole sauce, or perfecting the delicate balance of flavors in ceviche. In short, LA's culinary schools and workshops offer an immersive and educational environment for those eager to dive into the world of Mexican cooking.

In-Person Mexican Cooking Classes in Los Angeles

There is no shortage of Mexican cooking classes in Los Angeles. Whether you're a total beginner or an avid cook looking to refine your skills, attending one of these classes will leave you with plenty of new skills and a deeper appreciation for the richness of Mexican cuisine. In-person classes are also a great way to gain hands-on experience while receiving real-time feedback from an expert instructor. Participants can also meet people with similar interests and even make new friends.

Students hoping to learn more health-conscious alternatives to traditional Mexican dishes may find Sur la Table’s Fresh & Healthy Mexican class interesting. Participants in this course will learn a variety of techniques and use a wide range of ingredients. The menu includes grilled shrimp, creamy black beans, an avocado salad with segments of orange and jicama, and a pineapple lime sorbet for dessert.

Raw Done Tastefully also offers a Mexican cooking class focusing on healthy alternatives to conventional ingredients. In their Latin American Fiesta class, students will create enchiladas by wrapping them in dehydrated vegetables. They will also learn important knife skills to safely dice up a medley of vegetables to create a refreshing salsa. For dessert? A tasty mango tart with a coconut-flavored crust.

Spanish and Mexican cuisines are distinct in a variety of ways. For example, Mexican cuisine tends to be spicier due to its frequent use of chilies like jalapeños and serranos. However, they also share many similarities, including heavily relying on the same staple ingredients, like corn, beans, rice, tomatoes, chili peppers, onions, garlic, and various herbs and spices. To that end, the Spanish Cuisine class at Chef Eric’s Culinary Classroom is worth checking out. Taught by a chef with years of experience in Barcelona, this course covers multiple Spanish dishes, including chorizo puffed pastry bites, chicken with sherry and garlic, and paella.

Chef Eric also teaches a 4-Week Culinary Basics Series, which covers multiple foundational cooking techniques, and a brief Knife Skills class. Although these classes are not explicitly related to Mexican cooking, they are both excellent options for beginner cooks since all of these skills will translate to a more targeted Mexican cooking class. For example, proper knife skills are vital when preparing authentic Mexican dishes. From chopping vegetables for salsas and guacamole to slicing meat for tacos or tamales, having proper knife skills ensures that the ingredients are cut uniformly and consistently. This uniformity enhances the visual appeal of the dish and ensures even cooking and distribution of flavors.

Virtual Mexican Cooking Classes

The popularity of virtual learning continues to rise, so why not check out the range of online Mexican cooking classes available? These courses are taught live, so students will still enjoy interacting with fellow students and learning from a qualified instructor in real time. While online courses typically require participants to supply their own ingredients and equipment, they offer tremendous flexibility for students who cannot commute to a physical location for any reason.

The League of Kitchens offers two courses with Chef Angie, who was raised near the Mexican border and has been working in her family’s restaurants since childhood. Mexican Cooking Online with Angie teaches students how to make multiple dishes, including steak tacos with scratch-made corn tortillas, salsa verde, and guacamole. Mexican Cooking Workshop #2 is designed for vegetarian students, but anyone wanting to incorporate more meatless meals into their rotation is welcome to join. The menu for this program includes black bean tostadas, corn esquites, and spicy salsa roja. Angie also encourages her students to stick around after the meal is complete to eat together during a virtual dinner party.

Some students may prefer to learn how to perfect one dish instead of a more broad overview of Mexican cooking in general. If that sounds appealing, a couple of classes at The Chopping Block at Lincoln Square may work well for you. First, there is a Virtual Crispy Chicken Tortas class available. The course covers proper roasting techniques for vegetables and the best way to evenly pan-fry a crispy piece of chicken. Students will also learn how to shop for traditional Mexican ingredients, like chilies, beans, and avocados.

The school also has a beginner-friendly Virtual Taqueria Workshop available. In this two-hour class, students will start by making corn tortillas from scratch. To create the filling for their tacos, students will learn a variety of essential skills, including pickling vegetables and braising meats. Students attending virtual classes at The Chopping Block are expected to have their ingredients prepared and portioned before class begins, which helps keep the class running steadily.
