Best Silversmithing Classes in Los Angeles

Silversmithing is the art or trade of using silver to fabricate items by hand, usually jewelry but can also include kitchenware and other silver objects. Silversmiths use a wide variety of tools and materials to forge silver into unique and beautiful art pieces that they often have designed themselves. Silversmithing is considered a fine art since it requires creativity and design in its process and produces exquisite handmade pieces.

An ancient craft that has been used for centuries, silversmithing was at its height as a trade in the 17th and 18th centuries in Europe and the American colonies. By the mid-1800s, silversmithing had made its way to the American Southwest where the Navajo were using the art of working metal to create one-of-a-kind jewelry and useful everyday items. Most artisans today apply their silversmithing skills to creating jewelry like necklaces, rings, bracelets, pins, and other wearable pieces. In the art of jewelry silversmithing, silversmiths begin with a silver metal sheet or wire and then cut, shape, solder, and polish it into a beautiful piece of wearable art.

Why You Should Learn Silversmithing in Los Angeles

Are you looking for a unique hobby that takes time and dedication but produces exquisite works of art? Learning silversmithing is a great way to be productive during your free time since it allows you to create beautiful items that you can wear or give to others. Both a creative and technical craft, the intricacies involved in forging jewelry or other metal items will allow you to develop a wide range of skills. The focus and creativity involved in silversmithing make it a great stress reliever as well. Although learning silversmithing is not easy, if you practice and learn from professionals, you can become an expert silversmith.

Learning silversmithing will also give you the skills needed to start your own business or side hustle by selling your handmade jewelry. Many artisans set up their own studios or rent space in an existing workshop to create unique pieces they can sell on websites like Etsy and Amazon Handmade or to local jewelry stores. Bespoke or custom-made jewelry is also popular – customers will pay you to create a specific piece just for them. Learning silversmithing can also provide you with full-time job opportunities at various businesses, from small local jewelry stores to larger jewelry and kitchenware companies. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, jewelers or precious stone metal workers had a median average wage of 46,640 in 2021.

Joining a silversmith club or organization is a great way to network with fellow artisans and further your metal-working skills and business. The Society of American Silversmiths (SAS) was founded in 1989 as the country's only organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of silversmithing. Its members consist of skilled silversmiths with exceptional technical and design skills, as well as students who are just beginning to pave their way in the art of silversmithing. SAS provides silversmith experts and students with support such as networking opportunities and better access to the silversmithing market, including a unique referral service that commissions silver items. Hobbyists and artisans may also be able to find local silversmith groups that gather in-person and online through social media, for example, the Metalsmith Society on Instagram, a jewelry-making community founded in 2018 where jewelers of all levels connect and share information.

Virtual Silversmithing Classes

While in-person silversmithing classes can be taken at metalworking workshops, art studios, community centers, or colleges, online silversmithing classes can be taken from anywhere. Virtual classes conducted live online allow students to ask questions and receive feedback in real time, all from the comfort of their own homes. If you cannot find a silversmithing class in your area, you may be able to find one conducted live online and save yourself the commute.

The drawback to taking silversmithing classes online is that you will likely have to provide your own materials and tools, for which there are many in metalworking. This could be particularly challenging for beginner silversmiths who have not yet acquired all of the necessary tools and supplies. However, if you already have the tools or are planning to acquire them for future silversmithing projects, then taking a virtual class is a great way to get accustomed to using your own equipment.

Even if there are no virtual silversmithing classes currently available, you can find a plethora of art or craft classes available online. For instance, Food Craft offers Ceramic Llama Painting for all skill levels ages 12 and older. In this two-hour virtual class, participants will paint their own ceramic llama pottery while learning fun facts about llamas and their significance in South American culture. Students will also get a chance to virtually meet real llamas living on a farm in North Texas. A ceramic llama kit is sent to participants in advance including a ceramic llama, two paint brushes, a set of acrylic paints, gloves, and a snack.
