Shibori is a Japanese term for methods of dyeing cloth by binding, stitching, folding, twisting, and compressing. In Japan, the earliest known example of cloth dyed with the shibori technique dates back to the 8th century where indigo was the main dye used. (Japanese for “storm") shibori a wrapping technique where the cloth is wrapped on a diagonal around in a circle and then tightly bound by wrapping thread or wire. Next, the cloth is scrunched down and painted.
The morning session will be taught by Susan Provda -WickedBadAss.com. We will be creating two scarves that you can take home to wear or give as gifts. Each one comes out unique. The first will be a free form shibori tying technique. The second scarf will be total free form. The afternoon session will be taught by Audrey Rupe. Now that you have this beautiful piece of hand dyed silk, what do you do with it?
In the afternoon session of the class you will learn to wet felt technique called Nuno felting. This technique uses wool roving together with silk to create piece of fabric that will be used for clothing on jackets, t-shirts sweaters and lots more. Once you have learned the technique, then the options for your Nuno felted fabric are endless!
Wear older clothing or an apron. Comfortable shoes. This is an active process expect to be moving along with some good music!
Bring lunch and drinks. We will be taking a short break for 30 minutes to get ready for the afternoon session. If you have silk or other materials that you want to use, please bring them.
