What you'll learn in this history lesson:

A new exhibition at the Art Institute allows us to examine the impact of French Impressionism on an American city at the turn of the 20th century. But what formative experiences and events moved artists to participate in this modern movement? This class sees works of art by Claude Monet, and those of his colleagues and friends, through the frame of a historical moment in France with startling parallels to our own time. Each week we will discuss themes from the previous week's lecture and readings, and propose questions for the following week's discussion.

"A leader in educating artists, designers, and scholars since 1866, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) offers nationally accredited degree programs as well as Continuing Studies programs for adults and children, ages 4-18.  Considered one of the most influential art and design schools in the world, SAIC has continuing studies programs available to all skill levels.  Students develop their creative and critical abilities while working with renowned faculty, utilizing state-of-the-art resources, and visiting the breath-taking galleries at the Art Institute of Chicago."
