What you'll learn in this dye class:

Learn the basics of the natural dyeing process on fabric. Looking at the world around us - flowers, tree bark, and plants, etc. - we will create natural dyes. Apply the dyes with simple resist including Shibori (Japanese stitching, pleating, twisting), over dyeing, and mordant to create a wide range of colors. Experiment on small fabric pieces as samples to be able to produce a large piece at home.

Material List for Student to bring:
  • Fabric Total approx. 1y of natural fiber.
  • Silk works the best.
  • Some dyes may not take deep colors on cotton and/or linen.
All starch and sizing must be removed from the fabric before dyeing. Wash with one drop of mild soap or Blue Dawn in lukewarm water. Rinse well. Then, dry the fabric.
  • Your own rubber gloves and thin rubber gloves
  • Sketch book or notebook, pencil or pen
  • Plastic bags (take wet fabrics home)
  • Rubber bands, chopsticks, plastic clips for your own resist devices
No Metals for Natural Dyeing
  • Strings
  • thread
  • twine (tie fabric for resist)
Additional:
  • Strong threads, e.g. carpet thread, button thread with needles
  • Plastic sheet to cover your table area

Question from Anonymous
We want to learn how to hand dye wool. Will this class help us?
Answer from Evanston Art Center (.
Akemi Cohn, your instructor, writes: Silk and wool are both protein fiber and work well for natural dyes. Due to the size of the class (10 or so students), we all will share the pot. The size and weight of the fabric are limited – no sweaters/shawls. Each student will dye a small piece, handkerchief size of fabric per color. (Wool is heavy.) You’ll learn the basics and can dye larger pieces of wool at home. Hope this helps.
