What you'll learn in this colored pencil class:

Students with different levels of experience will learn colored pencil application techniques, with emphasis on transitioning from graphite to color. Various finishing techniques unique to colored pencils will be introduced.

Emphasizing form, drawing skills will be strengthened, facilitating your personal expression through botanical art. You will work from live plant specimens in the collegial environment of the studio. Students will receive demonstrations and individual guidance, as well as audio-visual presentations to illustrate the instructor’s themes.

Previous experience or skills in drawing recommended.

Refund Policy
Refund requests must be submitted to [email protected] prior to the program’s start date. The registration fee will be refunded less a 10 percent processing charge.

Fees are nonrefundable and nontransferable on and after the program’s start date. We cannot refund fees requested on or after the start date of a program or for sessions missed due to student illness or other personal situations.

Registration fees for courses grouped and priced as a series will be considered one program and subject to all of the above guidelines. A refund request must be received prior to the start date of the series' first class session and will subsequently cancel your registration in every session of the series. If you choose to re-register for other sessions in the series, the special discount does not apply.

Where do we park for this class and is there a parking fee?

Hi Judi! The Chicago Botanic Garden entrance is located on the south side of Lake Cook Road. If you use a map app, enter 1000 Lake Cook Rd, Glencoe, IL 60022 otherwise, you may be led to the walk-in only entrance off of Dundee Road. Please notify the Gatehouse staff member that you are registered for the Color Pencil Workshop and you will receive complimentary parking at the Chicago Botanic Garden for the day of each class session. Please proceed toward the Visitor Center. The closest parking lots are 1, 2, and 5. Accessible parking is located in Parking Lot 1.

What brand of colored pencils is required and what size pencil pack?

Colored Pencils: Min. 10-12 basics, including dark red, bright red, yellow, cerulean blue, darker blue, light green, dark green, purple, umber, cream, and a soft gray (brands:Faber-Castell, Prismacolor, Caran d'Ache, Derwent, Lyra). Optional recommended extra: Prismacolor Verithins. Watercolor Pencils: Min. 6-8 basic colors (brands: Derwent Inktense, Prismacolor, Caran d'Ache Supracolor Aquarell, Faber-Castell Albrecht Durer). Blender Pencil: colorless pencil.
