School: The Brooklyn Kitchen

The Brooklyn Kitchen is your favorite cooking store. We offer ingredient-driven groceries, quality tools and equipment, and technique-based recreational cooking classes.

It all started in 2006, when Taylor and Harry lamented the lack of a neighborhood kitchenware store. At first it was just good dinner...

It was a nice class overall, however I did expect us to prepare something which will be more of a main course and it didn't really feel like thats' what we are doing. Food was good, instructor was very nice and I have managed to pickup a few cooking tricks I did not know before so overall it was good.

Attended: Hands-On Pie Class

The Hands-On Pie Class was excellent. The main point of the course for me was to learn ONE GOOD pie crust, and that is what I learned, and more. They always say that you should not handle pie crust dough too much, but how much is too much? Well, this class taught me the answer to that question.

Attended: Thai Street Food

Good teacher, good menu, neat store, but the area dedicated to the class is a little on small side and a lot of background noise. Also think results would be better with a gas cooking device. Will go again.

Attended: Pickling with McClure's

Awesome class, I had Kendal as a teacher. Would defiantly recommend to others. We pickled carrots and got to take a jar home.

Attended: Cooking from the Masters

The content and menu was good, but a little disappointed. Class was scheduled for 3 hours, but we were done in 2. Also, not everyone got a chance to work on every dish - if not every person, at least each group (of 6) should have had a chance to contribute to each dish. All I did was prepare a dressing. The rest was all watching. I've taken classes at Sur La Table and performed each and every task, which is better learning.

Attended: French Desserts: Brûlée & Soufflé

I would definitely recommend this class! The chef was great, took time to make sure we were comfortable and offering lots of tips. Other attendees were really fun and the results were delish! The kitchen and shop are fantastic, will be taking another class soon.

Attended: Hands-On Pie Class

The teacher was fantastic!

Attended: Knife Skills

Great, informative class! Brooklyn Kitchen is a fantastic place to visit too.

Attended: Knife Skills

This course was fun and very helpful! The teacher was great. He made the sessions very informative yet entertaining.

Attended: Vietnamese Street Food

The course was fun, delicious, instructional, and easy. I would definitely recommend it! Flavors of Asia made simple by a great instructor, Connie. She offered some very basic knife techniques, flavor combination techniques, as well as source lists for obtaining hard to find Asian food items. The class area was clean, roomy, and efficient. Loved that part. Over all, I would say YES! Take the class!

Attended: Sourdough Bread Class

This was a great course! Bread, of course, takes more than 2 hours to make; sourdough, in particular, is quite time-consuming. The teacher got around this by preparing materials for each step of the way so she could demonstrate the whole thing, minus the waiting. A professional baker for a decade and a food chemistry engineer before that, the instructor had enough experience and knowledge to answer everyone's questions very clearly, and to a great level of detail. Honestly, I left the class feeling I could make perfect sourdough on my first try. (First try hasn't happened yet so I can't verify this.) Haven't ever taken a cooking class before, so I can't compare the facilities to anywhere else. That said, everything seemed pretty on target--and most importantly, it seemed like everyone could see the teacher's hands with no problem. Course also came with bread made that morning according to the recipe we learned in class; beer & selzer; and we were sent home with a little vat of starter. Highly recommended!

Attended: Thai Street Food

It was a great way to meet new people. The instructor and fellow table mates were very friendly, helpful, and accommodating when my boyfriend and I were running late. Even if you had never used a wok before or dealt with some of the ingredients being used, it was really easy to catch on or learn from watching others. The food we made was delicious and fun to have some beer to enjoy while we were cooking. The kitchen was really neat and the tools/utensils we were using were nice.

Attended: Cream Puffs, Eclairs & Churros

This course was amazing! You really can't go wrong!

Attended: Halloween Candy

This was so fun and seriously yummy candy!! I hope they do a Christmas cookie or candy class. That would be awesome! The instructor was sweet and easily understood! Also the store was amazing.

Attended: Meats: Cooking with Confidence

"The class was not at all what I expected. I wanted to learn how to cook different types of meat and I learned nothing. The instructor was no doubt an awesome cook but not good at teaching it to others. I thought the pamphlet given could've been more informative in terms of how to cook meat in different temperatures. After taking the course, I'm still confused how to purchase, slice and cook meat. It feel that I wasted my money on that class and all I paid for was a ,eat meal. This was a very disappointing class and should be taken off the schedule completely. "

Attended: Sausage Making

Great learning experience and overall fun time! The instructors were very friendly and informative -- obvious experts. The facilities are clean and spacious and well-prepared for the class. I look forward to taking more classes here -- this time I'll bring some friends.

Attended: Advanced Knife Skills

Ken was a fantastic instructor. He really focused in on a few key techniques that really make a big difference when deboning a fish or chicken. I think we all noticed significant improvement in our outcomes even just between the first and second half of each animal. I would definitely take another class with Ken. I would also definitely return to Brooklyn Kitchen. The second floor instruction space is great, and on the first floor they a grocery and kitchenwares shop that has a number of great specialty goods. I'm looking forward to my next class there.

Attended: Sushi

I would absolutely recommend this class! Very informative and fun! Connie was great, taught us all the ins and outs of sushi and I am itching to make some on my own now. very hands on and a great facility . enjoyed very much

Attended: Tomato Canning Bootcamp

Wonderful class!! Marisa is incredibly knowledgeable about canning. Her manner is very casual and friendly.

Attended: Doughnuts

Had so much fun. This was my first course. The instructor was knowledgeable and very patient. There's also a shop downstairs so you can buy anything! Can't wait to take another course

Attended: Knife Skills

This class was great. It was very basic, but a great way to learn the right way to use a knife, plus some really great tips on knife maintenance and purchasing. I definitely would recommend it - plus Brooklyn Kitchen is great, and the people there are really passionate about what they do

Attended: Fresh Pasta Making

I have some experience making fresh pasta but Kat, the Chef instructor really refined my techniques, or rather my lack of technique. The class was very informative and I would recommend it to anyone, experienced or inexperienced. The facilities are pleasant and conducive to a good learning experience.

Attended: Fresh Pasta Making

Great class in a fantastic space. Teacher took us through the process in a fun and informative way. I never had the pasta come out so well from scratch. Now I know what I was doing wrong when I did this on my own all those years.

Attended: Gluten Free Baking Class

Good fast recipes for cookies etc. without gluten...mainly using chopped nuts...also extra muffins/cookies/batter to take home

Attended: Fried Chicken & Waffles Class

I took this class with my husband and another couple. We had a great time. The teacher and staff were really knowledgeable, helpful and friendly. We loved The Bklyn Kitchen and can't wait to try out what we learned at home. The only thing I needed was maybe a half an hour more to have one more piece of chicken!

Attended: Sourdough Bread Class

I had a problem when I got there. I had paid for 3, (have the email for 3) and when I got there, the kitchen said they only received information from course horse that I had registered only 2 AND now the class is sold out. So, they thankfully allowed my third person to sit in but I had to pay for another seat. I need to know what to do about this . I have that receipt too so, do you refund me the cost of having to repurchase the ticket or who do I need to talk to? Please let me know. the class was really good by the way !Beth Meyer

Attended: Homemade Empanadas

Great space! Teacher was very clear and informative easy to talk to. Enjoyed class a lot.

Attended: Homemade Empanadas

Great hands-on class. Everything was perfect from the teacher through the classroom.

Attended: Pickling with Rick's Picks

Rick taught a GREAT class - very personable, easy to follow and fun! And The Brooklyn Kitchen is an awesome venue and store.

Attended: Pickling with McClure's

I really enjoyed this class -- the instructor, Kendall, from McClure's, was really knowledgeable and passionate about pickling. He answered everyone's questions and laid out the process of vinegar pickling really well. He walked us through a batch of pickled carrots with Indian-inspired spices, and now I'm ready to pickle just about anything! If you're interested in other kinds of pickling (e.g. the fermentation method), make sure to check the course description to see what the class entails, because apparently it changes from class to class. But this was a great introduction to pickling and I'd recommend it to anyone who's interested.

Attended: Knife Skills

Really enjoyed this course. Class size was small allowing instructor to give individual instruction throughout the class. I would definitely recommend this course!

Attended: Whole Beef Butchery Parts 1 & 2

The class was great. Both instructors were excellent and I learned a lot. All of the other attendees were nice. I'd highly recommend this class.

Attended: Mother Sauces 101

Enjoyed this class & learned a lot about the foundations of starting a different types of sauces, but wish it was more hands on.

Attended: Seasonal Seafood Class

A good introduction to cooking sea food. Very hands on, which I love, & the food was great.

Attended: Pretzel and Mustard Making Class

This was a great cooking class. Brooklyn Kitchen is always an enjoyable place to go and I found the teaching facilities to be very good. It was very clean and spacious. The teacher was exceptional. I don't recall her name, but she was very experienced and passionate. She made sure that everyone understood what they were doing and spent a good amount of time taking questions and having side discussions. The curriculum was easy to follow and I was able to make pretzels again the next day. I'm planning on making the mustard soon. The cost of the class is also very reasonable compared to many other cooking classes.

Attended: Chinese Dumplings & Wontons

The class was great, the facility was nice, and the teacher was knowledgeable. I would recommend it!

Attended: Chevre Making Class

I have to say- this class OVERALL was insightful and educational. With a few beers, great vibe and fun group it's a great time for singles and couples alike. Whether a cheese guru or not, this class is a basic level of understanding how the making of cheese came to conception, the dynamics of how all integral parts of the process come together, and a little trivia on the side. Not as hands on as I originally had thought it was going to be, nonetheless the class provided us with necessary steps in making cheese at home. Although I LOVED the teacher, but I don't think she was quite ready to share her knowledge. Definitely had the history and curriculum to discuss but needs a little more practicing of presenting it to a class. Lovely girl, just a little scattered when talking about the process. Facility was amazing. Clean, orderly and large enough to host quite a few students. I was also a little disappointed that the facility did not stock up on cheese that was presented during the class (we had a few and we were dying to buy some, but no luck-all out). Bummed us out a bit. Overally I would definitely suggest this class to friends.

Attended: The Kimchi Cookbook: Demo and Book Signing

it was fun and informative! great book + good samples

Attended: Pickling with McClure's

This class was great! Super informative especially for a beginner like myself :) Kendall (the instructor) was also very nice and fun. Definitely would recommend!

Attended: Mother Sauces 101

Loved the course! It was a great, short intrduction to making stock from scratch, and basic sauces anyone can make. The class was more demo-style than hands-on, but the instructor was very engaging and let us see/smell everything along the way. Recipes to take home, and lots of ideas for taking your home cooking up a notch! Plus we got to taste all the delicious sauces made during the session for dinner (+ wine!) Yummm! I had an issue with registration, but both The Brooklyn Kitchen & CourseHorse were very helpful in sorting everything out. I took this course for work, but will definitely be returning to The Brooklyn Kitchen to take another class (and browse their wonderful store again! Taking a course there gets you 10% off in the store.) :)

Attended: Meats: Cooking with Confidence

I would not recommend this course. I thought it was a waste of money. The chef didn't seem organized and the tasting of the meats were mostly horrible. The meats didn't seem to be cooked well.

Attended: Meats: Cooking with Confidence

This course was great. Besides working in the beautiful Brooklyn Kitchen and cooking with awesome meat, there were tips and techniques that a beginner and an experienced cook could learn from. The instructor changes per class but our class had a chef with many years of experience who answered our questions and told great stories. At the end we got to take home a set of recipes, some we executed and some we talked about.

Attended: Jams, Jellies, and Preserving

It was great! Knowledgeable teacher, very hands on, generous with the food, quite intimate space. No complaints. Except that the class ended too soon.

Attended: Meats: Cooking with Confidence

This was a great class - I love to cook, yet know so little about the world of meat. The class was mostly informational as we watched the teacher, Kat Randazzo, prepare several different meat dishes and explain her techniques. Kat is more chef than teacher, which is exactly why I enjoyed the class so much. She has so much experience and was able to express that through her preparation, throwing in cooking secrets as we went along. I would definitely recommend the course and I look forward to another class taught by Kat!

Attended: Fermented Pickles & Krauts

For being the first class that I have attended at Brooklyn Kitchen, I think it went really well. The space is amazing, and signing up for the class could not have been easier. Bob, from McClure's, was very thorough and engaging - I left with a great sense of knowledge on how to ferment my own vegetables to make pickles! I plan on taking many more classes in the future.

Attended: Baguette Making with Roberta's

It was great. Brooklyn Kitchen had a full facility that was well-situated for training. The instructor brought tremendous experience and was very helpful. I highly recommend baguette class at BK.

Attended: Quick Breads!

I attended this class having no idea what I was walking into, and then left very impressed (and full!). The Brooklyn Kitchen is a gem of a store, hidden but surprisingly accessible in Williamsburg. The kitchen was comfortable and open, leaving plenty of room to allow us to watch our teacher, Millicent. She was great and humorous, making the class comfortable and informative. She was insightful when it came to the science of baking and was open to any and all questions. We were able to make our own recipe, in addition to watching Millicent create several others. One critique was that I would have liked more student participation, which would have been more possible with perhaps a slightly less ambitious class (there was a lot packed in the 2 hours). Overall, I am very happy to have taken the course and will definitely be looking to take more with both this teacher and at this school!
