Beginners TaiJi

Be more energetic, less anxious, and more relaxed as you learn TaiJiQuan a.k.a. "T'ai Chi”, an ancient Chinese art of self-defense and well-being. Enjoy the mind-body exercise based on the principle of relaxation.

Learning TaiJi begins by following a series of gentle movements, and increasing relaxation. Each week, new movements are added to the form, each new movement brings new discoveries. Over time, the body and mind reach new levels of balance and agility. The form taught at TaiJi Union is Professor Cheng's 37-movement short form.

After a long time, the TaiJi practictioner becomes aware of their "Qi", or life energy. At this point, they may more easily avoid injury and sickness, and they become more sensitive to other peoples' "Qi". The harmonizing of this energy between individuals is practiced through "Push Hands", proficiency in this skill leads to reduced conflict in daily life and better negotiating powers.

Once students have completed learning the form, they may move on to Corrections class, Push Hands (the two-person exercise of TaiJi), or weapons forms, such as Sword.

Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothing and try to arrive 5 minutes early.
