Prototype Toy Sculpture

This class is open to artists of all levels wishing to learn the basics of toy sculpture as practiced in the toy making industry. Through lecture, demonstration and one on one instruction, this class will cover the essential skills needed for the student to create original (prototype) sculpture for vinyl and resin toy reproduction. The class will focus on these basics of toy sculpture:

• Sculpting with and creating your own toy sculptors’ wax
• The principles of sculpting for vinyl reproduction
• Constructing a simple jointed 6” figure from basic forms using 2D renderings
• The line of action, Proportions and planar relationships
• The uses of sculptors wax vs. oil-based clay
• Construction and use of toy sculptors wire tools
• Surface quality and textures, creating a professional finished look
• Rubber mold making and resin casting demonstration
• Discussion and information about large scale reproduction

Q&A

Q: Can I make up a class if I miss one? 
A: No, there are no makeup classes. Because art is taught with demonstrations and demonstrations are time consuming, if one person misses the class each week, the instructor would spend the first part of each class repeating the demonstration from last week before moving on to the next lesson, which isn't fair to the students who attended. That said, most of our classes are taught atelier style. If there is a demonstration during the particular session, after the demonstration, the instructor goes to each student to work with them on a one-on-one basis. During this time, the instructor can work with you if you missed the previous week to talk and explain what to do.

Q: Are materials provided and included in the cost of the class? 
A: Yes, materials will be provided. An apron is suggested.
