What you'll learn in this scene study class:Flex your acting muscles and refine your craft on a consistent basis. Explore the art and craft of acting through the great scenes of American dramatic literature written by some of our best american playwrights in this 6 week course.
Maggie integrates a variety of exercises into the scene study format, as well as working with the actor to learn to take risks and make big, bold choices thereby giving the actor an opportunity to improve their craft while gaining performance experience.
Casting will be done at the first class. The next 5 weeks will be spent exploring, refining and blocking in preparation for the final presentation on week 6 to a top NY Casting Director.
Here's a list of playwrights that will be looked at for scenes:
- Tennessee Williams
- Eugene O'Neill
- Lillian Hellman
- Edward Albee
- David Mamet
- Tony Kushner
- John Patrick Shanley
- Tina Howe
- Sam Shepard
- Neil Simon
- Tracy Letts
- Charles Busch
That's just the tip of the iceberg; the list is endless!
This is not a beginning acting class. It requires that the student already have solid acting training and are ready to fine-tune their skill set. We require that a student registering for this class have prior training or performance experience. It is intended for intermediate to advanced students.
Scene Study meets once a week and students are expected to be prepared for each and every class with a minimum of 3 hours of outside rehearsal. You will always have an acting partner, so your obligation goes beyond yourself to your classmates. The success of the class depends upon the commitment of each student.
Class size is limited to 14 to ensure personalized attention and plenty of time with each actor.
Refund & Cancellation PolicyRefund Policies:
We regret that we are unable to give refunds under any circumstances!
If you cancel at least 48 hours before the scheduled time of your seminar, you will not be charged. The policy for a class or special event is 7 days prior to the start date in order to receive credit for monies paid. It can be used for any and all programs at Actors Connection. There may be special cancellation policies for holidays that are printed in the schedule. If you cancel in time, credit is automatically returned to your Actors Connection account. If you are canceling late, no credit is given unless we find a replacement for you. We have, on occasion, been able to replace actors who late cancel with others from wait lists or who might be standing by. If you are replaced, as a courtesy, we will not charge you for the late cancellation. Please consider any late cancellation a charge on your account, and any resulting replacement a courtesy. You may want to re-adjust your schedule to attend, since although we do our best to have full seminars we can never promise a replacement. If you are a "no show" for a seminar, you will not receive credit under any circumstances.
Teacher: Maggie PhillipsSee Classes Taught by This Teacher »
Maggie Phillips has been a working union actor and teacher for over two decades. A 15-year stage career at some of the top LORT regional houses, she has had the opportunity to perform many of Shakespeare's ladies, Tennessee Williams' heroines, and a Eugene O'Neill victim. On the other end of the spectrum, her experience in contemporary theater is vast, both comedy and drama, and she has had the great good fortune to originate several roles in new plays. In front of a camera, Maggie created the role of Marianne on "The Guiding Light", and has an indie film "Aquarium" which won an Honorable Mention at this January's Sundance Film Festival and played at Brooklyn Academy of Music in June. As a voice-over, she has been heard on scores of commercials for everything from retail to pharmaceuticals to automobiles to cosmetics. As a narrator, Maggie has worked for many clients, including The Discovery Channel, The History Channel, The Learning Channel, and Court TV. Promo clients include Lifetime, A&E, and Buena Vista's A.M. network lineup--Live with Regis and Kelly, The View, and General Hospital. She is the founder of the original V/O Gym.
