Description

What you'll learn in this portrait drawing class:

This class is designed for the beginner who has never tackled the portrait, but has always wanted to learn how to get a lifelike drawing of the face and head. Students study facial proportions and anatomy in a supportive environment using a different model in each class as well as photographs. You will learn to see and accurately depict each feature of the face and by identifying distinctive individual characteristics have the rewarding experience of getting a likeness of the model. Class critiques provide valuable feedback and encouragement to ensure progress for each student. 

Please bring a $30 model fee, payable to the instructor, to the first class.

Materials for the first class session:

  • pad of all-purpose drawing paper 16" x 20" or larger (not newsprint)
  • compressed charcoal (Many different kinds. Bring whatever you have or what you think you would like to use)
  • vine stick charcoal (thick or thin)
  • kneaded eraser
  • plastic or hard rubber eraser
  • sharpeners: single edge razor blade or mat knife, sandpaper
  • 1 roll masking or drafting tape
  • rigid board with 4 bull clips to provide extra support for your drawing pad (1/2" foam core is very lightweight and highly recommended)
Materials for subsequent classes:
  • black waterproof drawing ink
  • brushes: $3.00 bamboo calligraphy brush at least ½" in diameter is highly recommended or any others you have on hand
  • chalk pastel, white and two complimentary colors, such as blue and orange or red and green, yellow and purple
  • charcoal paper—one sheet of black and one of a middle value such as gray or beige (or purchase a pad of neutral colored charcoal paper)
  • pencils (4B and any other pencils that you have
  • optional: graphite sticks (various sizes and shapes)
  • ballpoint and felt-tip pens
  • sharpeners: small pencil sharpener, single edge razor blade or mat knife, sandpaper
School Notes:
Registration fee is charged only once per semester.

Refund Policy

Refunds are granted if your written request to withdraw is received by our office as per schedule. Requests sent by mail will be considered by the date they are postmarked.

For 4-10 session classes

If you withdraw 5 business days before the first class session you will receive a 100% tuition refund. If you are withdrawing after the first session but before the second, then they are eligible for an E Voucher for 75% of the tuition fee. After the second class session no refunds or credits will be granted. 


For 1-3 session classes and workshops

If you withdraw 5 business days before the first class session you will receive a 100% tuition refund. If you withdraw 1 business day before the first class session you will receive a 75% tuition Electronic Voucher. No refund or voucher once the class starts. 

In case of withdrawal due to medically certified illness, a Cooper Union Letter of Credit/ Electronic Voucher will be issued upon receipt of physician's documentation. A Cooper Union Letter of Credit/Electronic Voucher will be issued for the balance of the remaining class sessions. There will be no monetary refund. Registration fees, model fees and materials fees are not refundable.

Refunds are processed in the order they are received and may take 8-10 business days to be processed.
