Recycle/Redesign/Remake - Shibori with Natural Indigo

Participants will learn how to dye their items using the ancient Japanese technique of shibori.

Shibori is an ancient Japanese dyeing technique using natural dyes, in this workshop we used natural indigo which has natural antibacterial properties and has been used abundantly historically throughout world history. It's a great contemporary way to update and refresh clothing or soft accessories.

Natural indigo was what Frenchman and Nimois, Levi Strauss used to dye his SERGE DE NIMES when he transitioned his inventory from bolts of fabric to pre-made pants  to meet miner's needs during the gold rush in the 1850's. This is where the term denim originated from, DE NIMES which translates to coming from Nimes a city in the south of France.

Learn to create traditional Japanese techniques to create patterns by sewing, using rubber bands, and wrapping and using ordinary materials like pebbles, chopsticks, any found objects.

You must bring 3 pieces of clothing/home accessories/accessories in natural fibers such as wool, cotton and silk. Or bring blank tees, scarves from American Apparel. All other materials will be provided.

Please be aware that the results of shibori vary widely and colors cannot be controlled therefore end products will be one of a kind unique pieces.

This is a hands on workshop so comfortable clothes and an apron is suggested. You will be leaving the workshop with wet garments so plan accordingly.

This is a great technique and the skills learned can be expanded and developed and applied in many different applications.
