What you'll learn in this kids art class:

The Teens will learn many different technical aspects of both printing and dyeing throughout the week by designing a print, mixing dyes, and of course screen printing their design onto fabric.

By the end of this week students will be equipped to coat and expose their own screen and will complete the class with fabric that is truly their own.

Textiles for Teens Summer 2012 is a pilot program at the Textile Arts Center offering three one week fiber arts classes introducing teens to the world of textile arts.

These classes; Weaving, Printing with Dyes, and Sewing+Fashion, will be comprised of instruction hours as well as free open studio time. Classes are located in our Artists in Residence studio space, and allow for students to work in shared studio spaces within the larger studio space.

Participants will benefit from a knowledge of textile history while attaining an awareness of its various applications in the field of fine arts, product + fashion design, as well as textile design. Students will be inspired through hands on art making, engage in critical thinking, and build on their abilities to take part in group critique.

Whether you are here to create portfolio pieces or just for fun, this is a great summer experience. Classes are divided by age (13-15 & 16-18) Students share a studio space with one other students, giving them the room to explore and the experience of their own studio space.

Please inquire about our financial aid, as we have a few seats available on a sliding scale. Aid is based on financial need.

Really liked using the knitting machine and Joey's instruction was great. Wish we had learned a little more in the 4 weeks for the amount of money it cost, but I'm happy with class as an intro.

Attended: Leather Working 101

Loved the instructor and the size of the class. Materials were great and I feel that I learned a lot. The only negative was that there was not time to finish the projects.

Attended: Indigo Natural Dyeing

The class was very interesting and the instructor was knowledgeable. Due to circumstances beyond her control, there was some trouble with the first batch of dye, but we were able to try again a second time. Two suggestions that might make things a bit easier for all: If the teacher provided everyone with pre-cut fabrics, so that everyone had the same size and number of pieces, that would be good (and if people brought their own stuff to dye, they could do so at the end, not during). Second, I think it would be good if the process of how to prepare the material, dye it, rinse, etc., were explained more clearly, especially for beginners. Instructor followed up with emailed information, which was nice. However, the class was very comfortable and a good experience trying something different. Thank you!

Attended: Sewing 103: Reclaim your Closet

Joey, the instructor/teacher is absolutely delightful! She was very knowledgeable, accommodating and simply a pleasure to learn from. I would go back to take any other course she is teaching!

Attended: Weaving 101

this is a very good class. Kira our instructor was excellent in that it was definitely a hands on program. We learned terminology as we needed it, we learned all the aspects a beginning weaver should know. Kira was encouraging and supportive of the project choices, when there were problems and questions. I highly recommend this class for anyone who is interested in weaving .

Attended: Leather Apparel Sewing

I thought the teacher was great and overall it was a good experience. I was disappointed in the facilities. It's not ideal to sew leather on home sewing machines, especially ones that aren't in proper working condition. Students had to share sewing machines.

Attended: Leather Working

The instructor Cat was very informative and gave excellent instruction and problem solving in leather working. We were able to learn several techniques that were applicable in many ways in a short amount of time. It would be helpful if there was the next level of class offered after this - an intermediate to advanced to work on techniques and to learn more solutions.

Attended: Felting 101 with STATE

A fabulous course! Adrienne was so helpful, patient, encouraging, inspiring. She showed us multiple techniques and we each made 4 different items, like table runners, kindle covers, bowls, bags, and wall hangings. She even helped me do a nuno felted runner when I asked for it, even though she didn't plan on doing any nuno felting. She provided all the materials and the workspace was roomy and comfortable. It was a great fun way to spend the weekend. Many thanks Adrienne, Marta

Attended: After Workshop - Batik Intro

While batik is a very cool technique to use, I didn't learn much in this course. The teacher for this class had rented this space outside of her regular studio and did not really have the right materials to do a good demonstration. She had a hot, oversized pot of wax that she put in the middle of a table, where people couldn't safely reach in to dip their paintbrushes without risking burning their hands or arms. She also didn't really talk about any additional techniques about how to paint on fabric with the wax, or what kinds of things might look better on the fabric. At the end of the class, you just wound up with the swatches of linen that you scribbled on - nothing real. Would not take this again.

Attended: Leather Working 101

This course was really fantastic. I learned a lot of skills is such a short amount of time and I really enjoyed every second of it. Kat, the instructor, is phenomenal. She gave individualized attention to each person and really was knowledgable and helpful. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants to learn how to make small leather goods, or just wants to learn a new skill.

Attended: Leather Working 101

The class was great! We learned lots of great techniques and each had as much one-on-one time with Kat (the teacher) as we needed. We were also able to modify the preplanned projects to fit our preferences. I came out of the class with three piece I actually like so I would say it was a success. If you are signing up (which you should) I would recommend bringing a couple yards of leather, as there was a limited supply of large pieces. All leather-working tools were provided as well as a list of places to get everything we need to do it ourselves in the future.

Attended: Sewing 101: Reclaim Your Closet

Given the small class size, the teacher was able to give each participant personal attention and help with their individual project(s). In addition to working on your own project, a portion of each lesson is spent on learning and practising various sewing/alteration techniques. Also outside of class hours you are given access to the studio to further work on your projects. The Manhattan studio is comfortable and adequately equipped. It is easy to get to - just a three minute from Washington Sq Station. All in all this was a great experience and good value for money. I also met a great group of people that I will keep in touch with.
