What you'll learn in this jazz music class:

Students will get a chance to learn all styles of jazz on virtually any instrument, including piano, guitar, drums, voice, saxophone, trumpet and more.

Week long immersion camp, M-F, 10am-4pm. Open for all instruments, ages 14-adults. International students are welcome to attend on visitor or work visas. 

Summer Jazz Intensives faculty features many of the finest jazz musicians and educators in New York City, including Tom Dempsey, Dave Ambrosio, Pete Zimmer, Adam Birnbaum, Dan Kaufman, Michael Webster, Alex Nguyen, Dan Blankinship, Tammy Scheffer, and Kelly Ash, among others.

These unique summer music camps emphasize practical playing experience through a variety of classes, clinics, and performance activities for today’s jazz musician. For the first time, this summer’s intensives will include a completely immersive jazz experience that incorporates visits to major New York City jazz venues, including clubs, historical sites, and visits with influential players on the NYC jazz scene.Each week features new curricular material, giving musicians the flexibility to attend as many weeks as they choose. All participants will be placed in performance ensembles that stress a combination of reading music, improvising and collaborative music- making. Participants will leave the program with a significantly greater understanding of harmony, melody, and jazz styles.

7:00pm Optional evening jam/hang

Required Materials: Piano, bass amp, guitar amp, drum set and music stands are provided. Guitarists and bassists should bring cables.

Refund & Cancellation Policy

All cancellations must be made in writing.  Cancellations are never accepted over the phone. If you cancel more than thirty (30) days before the first day of any workshop or course, New York Jazz Academy will retain $25 of your tuition payment. You will receive a refund of any additional tuition you have paid for that workshop. If you cancel twenty-nine (29) days or less before the start of any workshop or course, you will forfeit your entire tuition for that workshop. You will not get a refund. However, a friend or family member may attend the workshop in your place, or you may donate your spot as a scholarship to a financial need student. There is no refund for no-shows or withdrawals after the class begins. For transfers made thirty (30) days or more before the first day of a workshop or course, students will be charged a transfer fee of $25. No transfers are allowed less than thirty (30) days before the first day of a workshop or course. 

PLEASE NOTE: New York Jazz Academy is not responsible for providing make-ups or issuing refunds, credits or transfers for days or entire workshops/courses/private lessons missed as a result of illness, emergencies or other events beyond the Academy's control. Students will receive a full tuition refund only in the event that New York Jazz Academy cancels the workshop, course, or private lesson.

Javier Arau Javier Arau is an internationally acclaimed saxophonist, composer, and educator. The front cover artist on the July 2009 issue Saxophone Journal, he has received four Down Beat Magazine Awards for performance, composition, and arranging, and has received national awards and recognition from ASCAP, BMI, and MENC, among others. An active performer in New York City, he has shared the stage with Dizzy Gillespie, Richie Cole, the Joe Henderson Quartet, Clark Terry, Diana Krall, Steve Lacy, and many more. Lindsey Horner Bassist Lindsey Horner is one of the more versatile musicians in jazz and modern music. He has most often been heard with musicians on the cutting edge recording and performing with artists such as Greg Osby, Bill Frisell, Bobby Previte, Dave Douglas and Muhal Richard Abrams. As a leader he has produced four recordings, NEVER NO MORE, MERCY ANGEL, BELIEVERS and the recently released DON'T COUNT ON GLORY. Michael Webster Saxophonist Michael Webster's compositions have been played by Joe Lovano, Tom Harrell and Arturo O'Farrill at Birdland and by John Benitez at the Blue Note in New York City. In March 2008, Michael conducted the Grammy winning Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra at Symphony Space in Manhattan, where they premiered his original commissioned composition "Mombogro". He returned to lead the ALJO's performance of two commissioned arrangements in October 2008 featuring guitarist/composer Michele Ramo. Michael appears regularly with the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada as an orchestral saxophonist, and has been a featured soloist in this capacity with John Pizzarelli, Doc Severinsen, Barbara Cooke, Lou Rawls, Ian Tyson, Glen Campbell & Carol Welsman. Tom Dempsey Guitarist Tom Dempsey's reputation for hard swinging sophistication and pure musicality have made him a distinct voice in the New York jazz scene. Dempsey has performed and/or recorded with a virtual "Who's Who" of world renowned jazz musicians including: George Coleman, Kenny Barron, Roy Haynes, Bobby McFerrin, Jack McDuff, Jim Hall, John Abercrombie, Brad Mehldau, John Scofield, Tal Farlow, Buddy Montgomery, Gerald Wilson, Mel Torme, Richard Wyands, Muhal Richard Abrams, and Dave Brubeck. He has recorded four CDs as a leader: What's Going On (Citytone Records), Perspectives (Imaginary Records), Blues In The Slope (Igmod Records/TJD Music), If Only We Knew (TJD Music). Tom has also recorded as a sideman on many recordings.
