What you'll learn in this fencing lesson:

Students begin learning footwork, the proper manner of gripping the weapon and positions of the hand. Along with this foundation they will also learn the centuries old etiquette that exists in a traditional school of fencing.

Students receive instruction in classical and historical fencing from dedicated professionals of a traditional fencing lineage. Students receive individualized instruction. You may train in any of the weapons that they teach; French or Italian foil, French or Italian Dueling sword, Italian Dueling sabre, French small-sword, Italian or Spanish rapier, and stick fencing. 

Note: Bring comfortable workout clothing and a pair of sneakers. Plan on arriving 15 minutes prior to the start of the class.

Ramón Martínez is a traditional master of arms, teaching classical and historical fencing. Maestro Martínez is an inheritor of a “Living Tradition” generations old and a highly respected scholar of historical fencing. He has devoted nearly four decades to the study, practice and teaching of classical and historical fencing. He is the world’s preeminent authority on the Spanish school of fencing La Verdadera Destreza. He has brought more international recognition and respect for the Spanish school than any other master and swordsman within the last one hundred and fifty years.

Attended: Beginner Fencing Class

Everyone was very welcoming and friendly. The training was good; the instructors were patient and shared not only the techniques but also the history and rational behind things.


Attended: Beginner Fencing Class

This was the best thing I've done in a long time. After the first class, I had to keep taking classes at this school. The maestros are fantastic, the community is welcoming, and the instruction is completely individualized -- each student is taught one-on-one. I was the only female student as well as the only complete newbie who attended any of the weeks that I was there, but I never felt weird or out-of-place or anything besides welcome. Even though I don't live in New York, I'm trying to work out a way to travel up from D.C. regularly just to continue taking lessons here.
