What you'll learn in this comedy writing class:

Brush up on the fundamentals of Stand Up Comedy Writing through a combination of fast-paced lectures and writing exercises that let you immediately try your hand at what you've just learned.

The One-Day Intensives are fun, fast-paced immersions in a type of writing. You’ll get a mixture of brief lectures that hit the high-points and writing exercises that let you immediately try your hand at what you’ve just learned. The one-days provide an excellent overview of their fields, ideal for both the beginner and someone wanting a quick refresher course. Come in to class with a notepad, pen, and desire to learn. By the end of the day, you’ll be a more knowledgeable and skilled writer. One-Days are for beginners or anyone who wants to brush up on the fundamentals.

Topics include: Joke formula, mining a subject, comedy tricks, writing for persona, the business.

About Stand-up Comedy Writing Classes:
Comics say it’s the greatest high. You step into the light, take a swig of water, pick up the mic, then reduce a crowd of people to a mass of helpless laughter. Sure, the risks are great – silence, heckling, complete humiliation – but on a good night a stand-up feels rich enough to buy Cosby a cigar and Seinfeld a Porsche.
Performance finesse and a good crowd help, but you “kill” or “die” depending on your written material.  First, the laughs must be there on paper.  In our course, you will develop an eye for fresh ideas, an ear for well-crafted jokes, learn how to structure an act, and tailor material to your individual persona. Whether you favor shtick or sophistication, we’ll show you how to write standup material that makes ‘em fall down laughing.

What to expect in a one-day intensive workshop:

Lecture

The workshops provide beginners with a clear sense of fundamental principles. Participants have an opportunity to learn from professionals and ask questions.

Exercises
No matter what your level, in-class exercises get you writing.

Refund & Cancellation Policy

If you need to withdraw from class, here are your options:

For Everything (except one-session classes/events)
For a refund or credit, you need to send an email to [email protected] two business days or more before your class starts. You can either choose to hold a full store credit with us good on other classes for a year or you can opt for a refund less a $25 administrative fee and your $25 registration fee ($50 total).

One-Session Classes and Events (Write-Ins/Take-Aways)
If you withdraw from any Write-In or Take-Away two hours or more before it begins, you're welcome to a full Gotham credit toward another Write-In or Take-Away. No refunds are available.

A few more things:
  • Simply not attending class or notifying the instructor does not mean you've officially withdrawn.
  • Credits are valid for one year and cannot be changed into refunds down the road.
  • Some exceptions are made on a case-by-case basis for medical emergencies with a doctor's note.
  • Refunds take up to six weeks to process.
Please understand, we can't issue a refund after classes have started, even if you miss your first class. Similarly, we can't offer you a store credit one day before your second class or after that. We understand that other obligations get in the way of attending class, but these policies allow us to get other interested writers into class early enough to have a good experience, and this allows us to offer our classes at a reasonable price.
