Ceramics and Clay Sculpting: The Art of Ceramics

Understanding ceramics begins with an understanding of the clay you’re working with. In this class, Danielle will introduce the basic techniques for working with clay. How to build unique forms and objects by coil building, pinching, and slab construction.

This class is directed by the objects each student chooses to create. Danielle will guide them using foundational tools and traditional methods. After the initial creation, you will learn how to bring out the most vibrant colors in your piece using underglazes to decorate the unfired clay surfaces. Each piece will then be fired and sealed with a clear glaze making them food/plant safe and ready to be used in you’re own home. By the end of this two-session workshop, you’ll walk away with your own unique ceramics piece.

Important Things to Note: 

• You will learn how to shape simple forms used to create traditional ceramic vessels utilizing simple clay tools and basic techniques. The hands-on learning element of this class allows you to express your individuality and create something entirely yours while exploring the properties of the clay. 
• Students will get an overview of methods for surface decoration to accent your piece with vibrant underglazes. After the piece is built and glazed, you’ll have the skills to make a range of handmade ceramics.
• You’ll take home a glazed clay mug with you at the end of the class.
