Divine Flourishes

Victorian pointed pen flourishing, also called “off-hand flourishing,” is the shining star of 19th century pen work. In this workshop, students will learn basic strokes and simple flourishing techniques, and then combine them into delicate vines, leaves, berries, wheat sheaves, feathers, wreaths, and floral bouquets. Known for its repertoire of graceful curves and gentle ovals, this visually beautiful art form is both rewarding and relevant today.

Materials List:

• Straight Pen Holder, Speedball, black plastic, or better (red and blue ok)
• Oblique Pen Holder, optional (Hiro 40 plastic, gray—or holder of choice)
• 2 Nikko G nibs (make sure this nib fits in your holder)
• and/or favorite pointed pen nibs
• Higgins Eternal Ink or Sumi Moon Palace Black Ink
• Dinky Dip
• 12” clear plastic ruler
• Hard Pencil
• Kneaded eraser
• Dropper Bottle
• 2 Plastic Pipettes
• Ampad “Gold Fiber” Quadrille graph/grid quad paper pad (4 squares per inch)
• --OR--Rhodia graph paper pad (5 squares per inch)
• Tracing Paper, 5 sheets
• Borden and Riley Boris Marker Layout pad, 9 X 12, 50 sheets 
• Small bottle of water
• A few Viva Paper Towels
• Matches

Optional:

• Scotch Removeable Tape (blue label)
• Colored Pencils and/or markers
